A time when the strong winds of the Boyacá region come in use is every August, when the kite festival of Villa de Leyva takes the small and rustic town by storm.

Ever since the kite festival began in 1975, Colombians and tourists alike travel from all corners to spend the weekend admiring the colourful skies full of kites and boasting their creativity in a grand variety of kite-themed contests. 

They range from handmade kites to synchronised flights of kites, and welcome participants of all ages. What’s more, entry is totally free.

On both a national and international scale, this festival has become one of the most colourful events in the town.

There’s no better time to make a visit to the quaint and cobble-stoned streets of Villa de Leyva in the beautiful province of Boyacá, situated only a two to three hour bus ride from Bogotá. 

It will take place this bank holiday weekend. That sounds like the perfect excuse to go on a mini road trip!


The Kite Festival in Villa de Leyva runs this weekend from Saturday to Monday and has several activities starting at 9am each day.
