BRITISH hovercrafts are to be used in the Amazon to help Colombian military combat drug traffickers and rebel forces.

The first of the Grifton 2000 hovercraft began operating last week in the Amazonian rainforest in the Putumayo province which borders Peru and Ecuador.

The Colombian military have commented that they believe this vessel could make a huge difference to the effectiveness of combating the long-running insurgency.
